I just downloaded this nifty little program. Some Options programs go for hundreds of dollars, yet they have similar features. What I like about this one is that It calculates the theoretical price.Great feature that many programs don't Have. Thanks

I found this spreadsheet to be extremely useful, and saved me many hours of trying to code it all myself. I liked being able to access all the code, and make my own modifications and experiments. Thanks!!

Opinion

Dear OTW,
I finally got to try the spreadsheet. I entered the info for 4 calendar spreads, but could not tell the Strategies Page to pay attention to the different expiration months. Even though the Option Page recognized the different expirations, the calculated prices in the Strategy page were the same for the Long and Short positions, thereby making the graph a straight line.

Can you give me some guidance as to how to handle Calendar and Diagonal spreads?

If you reply by e-mail, I can send you a reply that has the Worksheet as an attachment, so you can see if I did anything wrong.

From My preliminary review -- Cool.
But, I will need more time to really get into it.

An elegant overview and simple yet effective macro to depict what kind of strategy one should favor in different markets. Gives a very good plastic view of the greeks and their sensitivities across ranges of inputs. Well done!

Good work. I added more functionality.
Note to earlier comment of somebody: Black-Scholes and variants are widely used by institutions but big money has to spread their bids and asks. Insider information penetrates to prices, too. Therefore market does not follow mechanically the model.
I use it to find overprice/underprice anomalies, run approximate simulations etc.

Nice work. I added a sheet to run a macro of two years price history of any stock and I get a very informative dynamic graph. A semiautomatic strike calculation was added, too. For my taste I changed DTE to 365 days model.
Actually I need an American options binomial model.
I recommend the program as informative and easy to add your own code.

Option Trading Workbook is terrific

I am writing a visual-basic program for trading stock options. I needed to calculate the theoretical price using the Black and Scholes model. I was unable on my own to program this model, so I googled "Visual Basic Calculator with Black and Scholes". Somewhere in the list I found the Stock Option Workbook.

After downloading the SOW, it was only a matter of minutes before I had it working in my Excel spreadsheet. It works beautifully. I intend to copy and paste the Excel macros into my VB program where I can then calculate option prices and other desirable quantities.

I highly recommend the Stock Option Workbook.

quick evaluation

The spreadsheet and access to formulas used are great for learning options. It does not appear to calculate numbers that match those form real option data (from sites such as Yahoo). Might need some tweaking.

Author's Response:
Hi there, thanks for commenting! About the pricing...it may be that Yahoo uses the Binomial model to calculate the theoretical prices of the options, where my workbook uses Black and Scholes model. Another common area that causes calculation differences is in the handling of dividends...I use a dividend yield for simplicity, where Yahoo may use a series of discrete dividends.

But the code is disclosed so that you may adjust and tweak it to your liking.

Thanks!

Peter.

At a price of FREE what could be so wrong?

Workbook is an excellent base from which I can develop further. Must be careful, though as there are numerous bugs and inconsistencies in formulas.

Newbie from Florida

I was looking for something that might make analysis a little easier to understand. This did not really help to make it easier to understand but has alot of information that it charts. I guess I was looking for more educational software.
